As part of the artistic research project Commemorating a Revolution Yet to Come (funded by FWF PEEK and hosted at the Academy of Fine Arts, Vienna), we are organising an exhibition series that examines the idea of remembering revolution(s). Through this series, we seek to explore the unstable relationship between aesthetics, memory, and political movement, asking how one might remember that which has not yet ended. Can the act of remembering a revolution become a continuation of its unfinished work, or does it risk freezing it into image and myth?

The first exhibition takes place in the small town of Mahad in Maharashtra, India, where Dr. B. R. Ambedkar launched his first satyagraha for a casteless society on 20 March 1927. Later that year, on 25 December, he organised a performative and ritualistic burning of the Hindu text Manusmriti. The exhibition Revolutionary Remembrance is organised as part of the commemoration of this December action. From the 23rd of December till the 27th of December the eXhibition will be in the basement parking lot of Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar National Memorial. Curated by Frida Robles and Ujjwal Kanishka Utkarsh, it features artists including Colectivo Los Ingrávidos, Birender Yadav, Vikrant Bhise, Anshu Singh, Rajyarshi Goody, Gurpreet Kaler, Aban Raza, Nepali Picture Library, Doplegenger, Mustafa Emin Büyükcoşkun, and Ujjwal Kanishka Utkarsh. It unfolds through film, installation, and dialogue. By situating this inquiry in Mahad, the project confronts the tension between resistance and its representation, between the political urgency of Ambedkar’s gesture and the forms through which it is remembered, retold, and reimagined.
